From a nurse's vision to a pivotal clinical study
In 1992, cancer nurse Bente Buverud witnessed the daily realities faced by people living with a stoma and envisioned a fundamentally different approach. That vision became OstomySecure and the TIES patient-controlled platform.
A founder's journey from bedside observation to biomedical innovation
In 1992, Bente Buverud was working as a cancer nurse when she first witnessed the daily realities faced by ostomy patients. The limited options available at the time represented an opportunity for meaningful change in patient care.
Over the following years, Buverud researched alternatives to adhesive ostomy bags, eventually developing the core concept that would become the Transcutaneous Implant Evacuation System (TIES). Her work combined clinical observation with engineering principles to explore a new category of stoma management.
The idea was to give patients control over their own body. A continent stoma solution designed to replace the adhesive bag entirely.
Her research laid the foundation for OstomySecure AS, which has since grown into a clinical-stage medical device company with operations across Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The TIES implant is currently under evaluation in a pivotal C03 study with 224 participants across 12+ clinical sites in 5 countries.
In 2025, OstomySecure AS received the MedTech Malta Award, recognizing the potential of the TIES platform within the global medtech landscape.
